July 25 2017 The California City Whiptails defeated the Hollywood Stars 15-8, overcoming a late challenge with eight runs in the eighth inning. California City finished with 14 hits, while Hollywood collected 13.
Tommy Haas led the Whiptails with two home runs, two hits and four RBIs. Tino Mention added two hits, a home run and three RBIs, while Juandy Mendoza went 4-for-5 with a home run, two runs and an RBI. Jason Wilcoxson and Maikel Serrano also homered for California City.
Hollywood took an early 2-0 lead in the second inning, but California City answered with three runs in the third and two more in the fourth. The Whiptails added two runs in the sixth before Hollywood pulled within two runs with two in the seventh. California City then broke the game open with its eight-run eighth inning.
Javier Taylor earned the win for California City after allowing five runs on 12 hits in seven innings, with two walks and six strikeouts. Cip Garza closed out the game with a scoreless ninth. Hollywood starter Colton Draney struck out nine in six innings but allowed seven runs on 11 hits, while Joe Watson was charged with the loss after allowing two runs without recording an out.
