July 18 2017 The California City Whiptails defeated the Hollywood Stars 16-11 in an offensive battle at Balsitis Park. California City collected 17 hits and scored in four innings, including a three-run first, four-run third, five-run fourth and four-run seventh. Hollywood finished with 13 hits and scored in five consecutive innings from the third through the seventh, but could not overcome the deficit.
Jason Wilcoxson led the Whiptails with three hits, two home runs and seven RBI. Austin Marcellus and Jonathon Tasis each added three hits, while Maikel Serrano had two hits and three RBI. California City hit four home runs in the game, with Wilcoxson hitting two and Tasis and Serrano adding one apiece.
Grant Arnold paced Hollywood with four hits, a home run and three RBI. Francisco Moreno went 3-for-4 with three RBI, while Jeremy Melvin drove in three runs and Christopher Scalisi hit a home run and scored twice. Hollywood’s biggest offensive stretch came after California City opened a 12-5 lead through four innings, as the Stars scored three in the fifth, two in the sixth and one in the seventh.
Tomas Gutierrez earned the win for California City after allowing 13 hits and 11 runs in seven innings while striking out seven. Emilio Griego completed the game with a scoreless inning. Gregg Gausden took the loss for Hollywood after surrendering 12 runs on 16 hits in six innings, and William Bass allowed four runs and issued four walks without recording an out.
