July 6 2017 The Tucson Saguaros defeated the California City Whiptails 10-1 at Kino Veterans, using a six-run fifth inning and a two-run seventh to pull away. Tucson finished with 12 hits and no errors, while California City collected seven hits and committed two errors.
Darryl Baca led Tucson with four hits in five at-bats, while Fernando Garza and Nicholas Vitale each had two hits. Vitale drove in two runs, Burnell Dailey contributed two RBIs, and Baca, Garza and Christian Triplett also drove in runs. Tucson scored once in the first inning, added another run in the third, then broke the game open with six runs in the fifth.
Matt Kelley earned the win for Tucson after allowing one run on six hits in seven innings, with three walks and three strikeouts. Kyle Schwartz added two scoreless innings. Billy Roth took the loss for California City after allowing eight hits and eight runs, six earned, in 4 2/3 innings. Roth also hit California City’s only home run and drove in its lone run.
