July 30 2019 The California City Whiptails overcame a seven-run deficit with a late surge to defeat the Monterey Amberjacks 14-12. California City totaled 13 hits and committed no errors while Monterey collected 20 hits but made three errors.
Monterey built an 11-4 lead through six innings, scoring four times in the first, three in the second, twice in the fourth and twice in the sixth. The Amberjacks added one run in the eighth, but California City answered with six runs in the bottom half to cut the deficit to 12-10 before scoring four more times in the ninth for the win.
Jose Tejeda led California City by going 3-for-5 with three runs, four RBIs and two home runs. Giovanni Prado was 2-for-4 with two runs, three RBIs and a home run, while Marcos Corrales went 2-for-2 with a run and three RBIs, including a home run. K. Wagner also homered and drove in a run. Monterey received three hits and three RBIs from Coleman Poje, three hits and three RBIs from Brooks Benson, and three hits from both Rory Graf-Brennan and Austin Marcellus. Benson hit three home runs, while Poje and James Prockish also went deep for the Amberjacks.
Tyler England earned the victory for California City after allowing one run on one hit with three strikeouts in two innings. Scott Bigelow started and surrendered 11 runs on 19 hits over seven innings. England was credited as the winning pitcher, while Coleman Poje took the loss after allowing four runs on four hits in two-thirds of an inning for Monterey.
